Active Zanzibar

Zanzibar’s relaxed pace encourages active travelers to explore the island in a spontaneous way.

  • Biking

    biking on Zanzibar

Due to the island's small size and the towns' narrow passageways, biking is the best way to get around Zanzibar. The air is not only filled with smells of spices, but also bicycle bells. We use local 1-speed bikes that are great for tooling around the towns and nearby 'suburbs'. Biking is a great way to take a grand tour of Stone Town.

    Beaching & Swimming

    beach

The beaches and waters of Zanzibar are angelic. The fine, white sands stretch farther than the eye can see. The beaches are dotted with hammocks and volleyball nets.

Unlike many other beach resort areas on the planet, Zanzibar's beaches are peaceful and quiet. In the early morning hours, local athletes do their daily workouts along the beaches and fishermen sail out to check their nets.

    Snorkeling

Since relatively undisturbed coral reefs and shallow waters surround Zanzibar, snorkeling is at its best. Zanzibar is connected to the African continent by a shallow submerged shelf and is therefore considered to be part of the mainland. Pemba is a 'real' island separated from the mainland by depths of over 3,000 feet.

Coral reefs protect both the islands' eastern coasts from the battering effects of the strong ocean currents. There are 150 species of coral. The western coast of Zanzibar harbors small coral formation while on the eastern coast and around Pemba Island, the coral rises to towering cliffs. Underwater photographers will enjoy the sharks, tuna and barracuda around Pemba. Equipment is available for rent.

    Scuba Diving

If your definition of paradise includes endless beaches of white sand, warm turquoise waters, light tropical breezes, a wayward palm tree or two - and of course, diving expeditions - you'll find your dream along the Indian Ocean in Zanzibar and particularly off the coast of Mafia island. The water is beautiful and the underwater sights fascinating! We'll join local divers as they share some of their favorite spots. Equipment is available for rent.
