Nighttime lemur safaris on the island of Madagascar cap the 2005 Rift Valley Rainmakers and Serengeti trip.
Rare Tanzanian adventure reveals Africa's wonders, secrets
January 2005 - An 11-day luxury adventure, Rift Valley Rainmakers and the Serengeti offers travelers an unforgettable safari expedition and direct interaction with authentic African culture.
Running from June 8 to June 18 of 2005, the voyage will take travelers through the wondrous national parks of northern Tanzania -- the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and more. From there, the group will head into the remote region of the Barabaig, a secretive pastoral tribe who still live like their ancestors.
Nichole Smaglick, president and founder of the East African travel company, Another Land, will lead the tour. This past summer, Smaglick led a groundbreaking documentary film expedition for National Geographic that explored the culture of the Barabaig in central Tanzania. She also launched an indigenous jewelry and leather handbag project, called Amias, with a group of predominantly Barabaig women.
Thus, we at Another Land are now truly accepted as family amongst the Barabaig and other tribes in East Africa and so shall all our travelers when they join us. Our dedicated grassroots safari company gives travelers a comprehensive, authentic cross-cultural experience, from storytelling around village campfires to getting a glimpse of the mysterious ways of rainmaking elders to learning how to brew honey beer. Proceeds from every trip go toward community-driven development in the villages. Funds from past visits were used to build desks for the school and to help the village access clean water.
Another Land also offers set-departure adventures to the exotic islands of Zanzibar and Madagascar in the weeks following Rainmakers and the Serengeti. Between nighttime lemur safaris in Madagascar and coral reef snorkeling in Zanzibar, these voyages offer comprehensive tours of the paradise Indian Ocean islands.
The Barabaig is one of the few tribes in Tanzania that has held fast to its traditional ways and culture. Smaglick has maintained long-standing relationships with this secretive Barabaig tribe, so joining her on her return to the village is a rare opportunity, as only a small number of outsiders are allowed to visit each year.
