Nichole filming under a watchful eye.
Another Land leads groundbreaking film project in Northern Uganda
August 2005 - Nichole Smaglick, president and co-founder of Another Land, is in the midst of a groundbreaking film project in East Africa. Heading into the far reaches of Northern Uganda, she will field produce a documentary about the Ik people. The remote and nomadic
Ugandan tribe has long lived in some of Africa's harshest
conditions, and they gained notoriety, and perhaps undeserved
infamy, with the publication of "The Mountain People" by anthropologist
Colin Turnbull in 1972.
Nichole will be joinged by independent New York filmmaker and producer, Cevin Solig. Insprired by Turnbull's biting and biased account of the Ik, Cevin's original idea was to explore how the Ik truly live today and to give them a chance to
tell their own story. He set off in late July along with Nichole, a
veteran cameraman, and a hardy and rugged crew for a three-week
expedition and shoot.
In addition to an aggressive filming schedule, the group faced a challenging journey that started with a four day march into the mountainous homeland of the Ik. A four person crew and forty porters were entirely self-sufficient, carrying film gear, food, tents, and all supplies on foot to this region south of Sudan.
