Cheetahs and Chagga in Tanzania

July 30 - August 6, 2008

Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro

“…..Compie turned his head and grinned and pointed and there, ahead, all he could see, as wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun, was the square top of Kilimanjaro. And then he knew that there was where he was going.”
~From The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Ernest Hemingway

Overview

Now you can envision those same snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro as they await you on your horizon. You’ll take on Kili via the Machame Route, which has also been nicknamed the Whiskey Route. With some of the most stunning views on the mountain, Machame takes you through five ecological zones, from rainforest on the lower slopes to the heath and moorlands to alpine desert and finally to the icy peaks themselves. You will be led throughout this amazing journey along with expert local drivers and guides, rangers, cooks and porters, artisans, and village elders along the way. Besides being Africa’s tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. It formed 750,000 to 360,000 years ago from the lava of its now inactive volcanoes. Today it stands among the Serengeti and Zanzibar as one of Tanzania’s great destinations known all over the world. Almost half of the travelers who attempt Kilimanjaro never make it to Uhuru Peak at 19,340 feet even though the climb is not technical and rarely exceeds an arduous hike. Many times the ones who fall short are those who underestimate the climb and are unprepared for the thin air at high altitudes. The days you have spent with the Chagga have helped your body acclimatize. Many past Another Land climbers have compared their time with this tribe to a right of passage to the mountain. Now you are ready to take on the slopes of Kilimanjaro yourself.
